Hyperice Migrates to Magento 2 and Secures Ongoing Site Protection with Silk’s Managed Services Team

Hyperice is the leader in recovery and movement enhancement technology, utilizing ice, heat, percussion, and vibration. Its mission is to provide athletes with a set of tools that improve performance by accelerating recovery time, preventing injury, and enhancing the body’s ability to move more efficiently. Although its site was beautiful and its products were outstanding, the site itself was suffering from numerous injuries that were the result of problematic site design. When Silk first met Hyperice, the company was in full crisis mode. The site was so rife with skimmers, malware, and fraudsters that its payment gateway provider, Global Payments, was withholding funds and threatened to cancel its contract.

Before partnering with Silk, Hyperice’s site was previously built on the Magento 1 platform by a developer with strong design chops but who appeared to have little experience in developing using Magento best practices. Additionally, the site wasn’t PCI compliant, and Hyperice wasn’t working with a managed services provider, which meant the company didn’t have a partner to monitor the site continuously for security issues. Due to its many vulnerabilities, the site was the victim of continuous attacks.

KEY CUSTOMIZATIONS

INTEGRATION

The Silk Team integrated a Sucuri firewall to prevent attacks and provide security scans, as well as Bolt, a payment gateway that also provides multiple layers of security.

MIGRATION

Silk migrated the Hyperice site from Magento 1 to Magento 2 so that the company could benefit from the newer platform’s more robust security, including full PCI compliance.

ONGOING PROTECTION

Silk’s Managed Services team now monitors the Hyperice site 24 x 7, ensuring that its site isn’t hacked and that its customers’ data is fully protected.

OUR SOLUTION

The Silk Team realized that Hyperice urgently needed to upgrade to Magento Commerce 2. In the interim, however, Silk would need to plug up the holes in the company’s existing Magento 1 site so that Hyperice could stay in business and continue providing athletes the products they need to stay active.

Silk began by implementing Sucuri, a website security service that offers a website application firewall (WAF), ongoing monitoring, malware removal, and proactive security scans and reports. Once installed, the Silk team went through the entire site and removed all the malware and skimmers that had been lurking undetected.

Silk also recommended and integrated Bolt as an extra level of security and as a way to streamline Hyperice’s operations. As one of Silk’s partners, Bolt consolidates robust security, a payment gateway, and various levels of accountability into a single platform. Critically, Bolt offers unparalleled customer service, responding to questions and issues in real time. Bolt’s responsiveness was essential in helping the Silk team resolve the immediate holes that made the site vulnerable.

The Silk team tapped into its deep expertise of the Magento 1 platform to recode all of Hyperice’s product pages, an exercise that brought the site in line with M1 best practices and eliminated multiple vulnerabilities.

The Magento 1 fixes were short term, however. Even with the necessary and critical fixes implemented by Silk, Hyperice couldn’t meet Global Payments’ security demands for release of its funds. To ensure long-term security of Hyperice’s site and its customer data, Silk worked to migrate the site to Magento 2 as quickly as possible. Leveraging the existing site’s excellent aesthetics, Silk completed the Magento 1 to Magento 2 migration in four months.

Since its partnership with Silk began, Hyperice has not suffered from any successful attacks from malware, skimmers, or hackers on its site.
